Lore
Arcane ScribeFrom the sun-baked plazas of Calimshan to the frost-rimed eaves of Neverwinter, the cat is a fixture of civilization that remains forever apart from it. Legends whisper these predators were birthed in the Feywild to serve as the eyes of mercurial archfey, or perhaps they are the remnants of a primordial pride that once traded its voice for the ability to see through the Veil. They possess a preternatural awareness of the unseen, their slit-pupiled eyes tracking the shimmer of invisible sprites or the lingering chill of a spectral presence that mortals fail to perceive.
Whether lounging atop a wizard’s grimoire or prowling a pirate’s bilge, cats are respected for their inscrutable nature. They are creatures of ritual, often found guarding thresholds or curled where the Weave gathers thickest. A cat’s sudden, arched-back hiss toward an empty corner can chill the blood of the bravest sellsword, signaling a hidden threat that has yet to manifest within the Material Plane.
Travelers should heed the cat that persists in their company. In the City of Splendors, a one-eared tomcat is said to lead the lost to the dens of the criminal underworld, while a stray prowling a battlefield might be the only witness to a king's betrayal. To harm one is to invite a string of inexplicable misfortunes, for the cat never forgets an insult, and its silent judgment follows the wicked into the dark.
