Lore
Arcane ScribeCampestri emerge from the humid rot of primeval forests where the Feywild’s influence bleeds into the Material Plane. These ambulatory fungi appear as little more than capped mushrooms with wide, vacant eyes, yet they possess a communal spirit as infectious as their spores. Though they lack a language of their own, they are obsessive mimics, capturing the stray notes of a traveler’s flute or a predator’s cry and repeating them in a dissonant, nasal chorus that echoes through the sunless gloom of the undergrowth.
They gather in damp glades and fairy rings, swaying in a grotesque parody of dance whenever melody drifts upon the wind. While seemingly whimsical, their mimicry is often a deceptive lure; a ranger might follow the "voice" of a lost companion only to find a circle of these fungi shrieking a distorted version of a name into the mist. They are easily swayed by song, but their devotion is fickle and often ends in a cacophony that can drive the sanest traveler to madness.
In the Wailing Grove, a bard’s final, dying melody has been preserved for decades by such a patch. To stumble upon them is to hear a ghost’s last breath turned into a never-ending, screeching anthem—a sonic mask for the predatory horrors that feed in the campestri’s wake. Unwary adventurers who pause to listen to the mushrooms’ stolen song often find themselves surrounded by the very rot that birthed them.
